6 things to do in Sofia

Last weekend I travelled to this special city in Eastern Europe. It only has been a short trip but these are the things I was able to do.

Oldest church in Sofia, Bulgaria

So my trip started on friday around lunch time for which I took a day off and ended on sunday afternoon. In this small article I wanted to give you an overview on what to possibly do in the capital. After arriving and checking in into "Hostel 44" which was in my opinion okey-ish ... lot's of moscitos, construction outside starting in the morning and a well, not really inviting looking breakfast ... I went straight to the

1. Free walking tour

This tour has been actually awesome. It is well organised and takes you to many of the important places around Vitosha Boulevard. It has been super organised and very entertaining, the tours happen every day (10am, 11am, 6pm) and start in front of the palace of justice. I actually met two other people from my hostel at that tour which I just had seen before so it had been great all in all. Just for the people who do not know free walking tours - at the end of the tour you can tip / donate to the tour guide.

After that tour we did grab some food in one of the many restaurants around and walked back to the hostel after. After dropping some stuff like our cameras we went straight to

2. Bar Friday

Well, we actually checked out another place before but it was closed due to construction. Bar Friday is a good place to hang around on as the name says a friday night. It fills up very late (around 1-ish), drinks are for european standards cheap, there has been no entrance when I've been there. A good place to check out. Next day we actually went for the

3. Free food tour

This one starts usually at 2pm in the afternoon from the Cristal Park. In total we visited 5 places from smaller take-away menus to traditional bulgarian restaurants and modern vegan cafes. It does work as the free walking tour and personally I really enjoyed it. After a small nap in the afternoon it has been saturday night and we actually went for the

4. Pub crawl

I guess this is a good option to have some drinks for solo traveller and meet fellow other travellers. Since you pay around 10€ up front it was in my opinion not as good organised as the other tours. I only went for the first 4 venues which all have been pretty empty besides our pub crawl group. I missed a bit like a special selection here. It did not feel that these are the places where people usually tend to go on a saturday night. Just as further information the pub crawl starts at 9pm at Cristal Park.

5. Hiking Vitosha Mountain

would be another option to do. I know that there are free tours too since the weather forcast has been not too good I did not go for the hike.

6. Hot Natural Springs

If you are not interested in guided tours, hiking or drinking. There would be another option of visiting the hot natural springs inside the very middle of the city. More exact just a few minutes walking away from the central metro station near the mosque. The water is heated by vulcanos and is potable as the water is in general in Sofia. Relax here and watch the locals filling up their bottles as they go.

For more exact information where to find the places ask in your hotel, hostel or apartment.
